What Is Satoshi? What Is Jager? What Is Wei? What Are Sub Units For?

Satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin; Jager is the smallest unit of Binance Coin; Wei is the smallest unit of Ether.

Standard cryptocurrencies measure the value of one token or cryptocurrency. All cryptocurrencies consist of a base unit and sub-units called nominal values. Nominal values are also applied to many fiat currencies. For instance, 1 USD, the currency of the United States, corresponds to 100 cents. 1 USD is the base unit, while 100 cents is the face value.

Cryptocurrencies operate with similar nominal values. For instance, the base unit of Bitcoin is 1 BTC and its sub-unit is called Satoshi. Likewise, the sub-unit of Binance Coin is called jager.

What Is Satoshi?

Satoshi is considered the smallest unit of Bitcoin. A full Bitcoin is equal to 100 million Satoshi. In other words, one Satoshi is equal to 0.00000001 BTC. One Bitcoin cannot be divided by more than one Satoshi because the smallest unit of Bitcoin is the Satoshi. Satoshi are used for small transactions and payments when the Bitcoin price rises.

The term Satoshi is used to refer to Satoshi Nakamoto, who published a technical paper in 2008 that accelerated the development of Bitcoin.  The paper, "A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System", describes the use of a peer-to-peer network that provides a solution to the problem of double-spending.

If an asset is intended to be used as a medium of exchange, it should be broken down to its smallest unit. For instance, for fiat currencies, the US dollar into small units such as cents.

Cryptocurrencies can likewise be divided into small units.

What Are the Main Features of Satoshi?

Satoshi has some main features. These main features are:

  • It is the smallest unit of Bitcoin.
  • One hundred million Satoshi is equal to one Bitcoin.
  • Used for small amounts when Bitcoin prices are high.
  • Used to pay transaction fees.

What Are Satoshis Used for?

Satoshi is used for the high Bitcoin prices and small transactions. In other words, they are used to own, sell, and send small amounts of Bitcoin. Satoshis are also often used to pay transaction fees. Transactions are described in Satoshi instead of Bitcoin. This is because working with large amounts of decimal points requires a lot of space.

What Is Jager?

Jager is considered the smallest unit of Binance Coin (BNB). One full Binance Coin is equal to 100 million Jagers. In other words, 1 Jager is equal to 0.00000001 Binance Coin. Jager can be divided into 8 decimal places. Decimals in cryptocurrencies refer to the degree of divisibility of an asset. The number of digits following a decimal point is technically called decimal places.

Binance Coin (BNB) is a cryptocurrency created and traded on the Binance platform. The nominal value of Binance Coin is called Jager. Ethereum's nominal value, the smallest unit, is called Wei. The term Jager refers to the Telegram username previously used by Changpeng Zao, Binance's CEO and community manager.

Jagers are to Binance Coin (BNB) what Satoshis are to Bitcoin (BTC).
Jagers are to Binance Coin (BNB) what Satoshis are to Bitcoin (BTC).

What Is Wei?

Wei is considered the smallest unit of Ether (ETH) used on the Ethereum network. One full Ether (ETH) is equal to 1x1018 Wei. The concept of Wei refers to cryptography activist Wei Dai, who promoted the use of strong cryptography and privacy-oriented technology.

As the value of cryptocurrencies increases, the size of blockchain transactions tends to decrease. While a US dollar can be divided into just 100 cents, cryptocurrencies can be divided into much smaller units. While one cent is considered the smallest unit of US currency, digital currencies can be divided into billions of smaller units.

Wei and other Ether units are used to represent smaller units that are typically used for transaction fees, setting gas limits, or lower-fee swaps.
