What Is Gwei? What Is It Used For?

The smallest unit of ETH, the native currency of the Ethereum blockchain, is called "Gwei" and helps to denote gas fees.

Cryptocurrency units, like fiat currencies, can be subdivided. One unit of the native currency of Ethereum, ETH, is referred to as "Gwei." 1 ETH is equal to 1,000,000,000 Gwei. On the Ethereum blockchain, Gwei is utilized to represent gas fees (transaction fees). According to the example given on Ethereum.org, if the gas fee is 0.000000001 ether, this is considered 1 Gwei.

The term "Gwei" stands for "giga-wei" and takes its name from Wei Dai, the founder of b-money and a computer programmer. Gwei is also known as "nanoether" and is used to determine gas prices on the Ethereum network. Time is required for a transaction to take place on the network. Gwei is what speeds up the transaction processing time. Gas fees are payments made by users to miners or validators on the Ethereum network to process and verify transactions. An example of Gwei is "Satoshi." Satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, which has the largest transaction volume. 1 Ethereum is equal to 1 billion Gwei.

How Is Gas Fee Calculated?

When a transaction is initiated on the Ethereum blockchain, the wallet you are using automatically estimates the gas fee required for the transaction to be processed. If you want the transaction to be processed quickly, you can pay a higher transaction fee. Gas fees can vary depending on the network's congestion. Network congestion can be checked through sites such as Etherscan or Gas Tracker.

The calculation formula for transaction fees is as follows:

Gas Fee = Gas Cost x Gas Price

What Is Ethereum Gas Price? Gas and Gwei

Ethereum is a blockchain that allows users to conduct decentralized transactions with one another. Gwei is a small Ethereum unit that is utilized on the Ethereum network. The payment made by users to miners or validators to process and validate transactions on the Ethereum network is known as the gas cost. Gwei is the currency used to pay for gas.

Gas can be defined as a pricing mechanism on the Ethereum blockchain. This mechanism ensures that fees are calculated when users provide a transaction or execute a smart contract operation.

Ethereum units have various names and these nicknames are as follows:

  • Wei (Wei): Inspired by Wei Dai, the creator of B-money and a precursor to Bitcoin (BTC).
  • Babbage (Kwei): Named after Charles Babbage, a mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who created automatic calculation engines.
  • Lovelace (Mwei): Inspired by Ada Lovelace, a mathematician, writer, and computer programmer who published the first algorithm.
  • Shannon (Gwei): Named after Claude Shannon, a mathematician, cryptographer, and crypto analyst.
  • Szabo (Twei): Derived from Nick Szabo, a computer scientist, legal scholar, and cryptographer known for his important research in digital contracts and digital currency.
  • Finney (Pwei): Named after Hal Finney, a computer scientist, and cryptographer.
  • Buterin (Ether): Inspired by Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum.

How Does Ethereum Work?

In 2021, Ethereum implemented an upgrade called the London Update, which affects the calculation of ETH gas fees. Below, we have provided information on how the London Update affects gas fees.

Before the London Update

  • When Person X initiates a transaction to send 1 ETH to another person, the gas limit is set to 21,000 units and the gas cost is set to 200 Gwei.
  • The total fee is calculated as follows: Gas limit x Gas price. Therefore, 21,000 x 200 = 4,200,000 Gwei, which is equivalent to 0.0042 ETH.
  • After the transaction is complete, Person X will have sent a total of 1.0042 ETH. The recipient will have 1 ETH, and the miner will receive 0.0042 ETH.

After the London Update

After the London update, the aim is to simplify gas fees for network participants by making them more predictable. With the update, the burning mechanism that will help balance the production of ETH is also introduced. The base fee is burned and individuals are expected to give a priority tip for transactions. Tip amounts can affect transaction processing. In many digital wallets, tips are automatically determined.

After the London update, ETH gas fees are calculated as follows:

  • When person X initiates a transaction to send 1 ETH to person Y, the gas limit is 21,000 units with a base fee of 100 Gwei. Person X gives a 10 Gwei tip.
  • The calculation formula can vary as Gas units (limit) x (Base fee + Tip). In this scenario, the gas fee will be 2,310,000 Gwei or 0.00231 ETH, which is 21,000 x (100 + 10).
  • Once the transaction is complete, Person X will have sent 1.00231 ETH. The recipient will receive 1 ETH, the miner will receive 0.00021 ETH, and 0.0021 ETH will be burned.
