What Is Bitcoin Pizza And How Did It Originate?

The first physical real-world purchase made with Bitcoin (BTC) is called Bitcoin Pizza.

Bitcoin Pizza is known as the first physical purchase made with Bitcoin as well as the first transaction made with a cryptocurrency. A man named Laszlo Hanyecz from Florida asked for help from users on a forum called Bitcointalk, offering to pay 10,000 Bitcoin for two large pizzas. Laszlo Hanyecz earned the Bitcoins he had by mining cryptocurrency on his laptop. In those years, it was much easier to earn Bitcoins by mining. However, today Bitcoin mining requires much larger investments and advanced computer or mining equipment, as it has become more competitive and popular.

Here is the post shared by Laszlo Hanyecz on the forum:

"I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I'm aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you're happy!"

A British man named Jeremy Sturdivant accepted Hanyecz's request for help and ordered two large pizzas from Papa John's to Hanyecz's house on May 22, 2010, in exchange for 10,000 Bitcoins. At that time, the 10,000 Bitcoins that the British man received from Hanyecz were worth about $41.

Nine months after this first pizza order, the price of Bitcoin reached $1, making the total value of the Bitcoins used to purchase the two pizzas reach $10,000. In 2015, the value of the two pizzas, which were bought for $10,000, was approximately $2.4 million. Then, in 2021, the price of Bitcoin reached a record high of $65,000, and the value of the two pizzas reached a value of $650 million.

Jeremy Sturdivant covered the expenses of his business trip with the 10,000 Bitcoins (BTC) he received in exchange for two pizzas. In an interview, Hanyecz said he did not regret the exchange, as the idea of trading Bitcoins, which had no value at the time, for a pizza seemed incredible. Now, this interesting and remarkable event is celebrated every year on May 22 as Bitcoin Pizza Day by cryptocurrency enthusiasts. The fact that this event marks both the first physical purchase with Bitcoin and the fact that 10,000 Bitcoins became worth millions of dollars at the peak of their value has made it an interesting and significant event.
